Snapdragon Volunteers at Young Women in Science Event
08.24.2021
Waltham, MA – August 24, 2021 – A group of women scientists and engineers from Snapdragon Chemistry recently teamed up with Berkshires-based Flying Cloud Institute for a day of volunteerism, scientific exploration, and ice cream as part of Flying Cloud’s “Women in Science” summer program.
The Snapdragon group met with about 20 young women between the ages of 10-15 in early August as part of Flying Cloud’s STEM Summer Program at Berkshire Community College’s Pittsfield campus. Seven Snapdragon scientists connected with young aspiring female scientists to discuss their careers in science and to inspire them to pursue their scientific passions.
Flying Cloud Institute is a nonprofit that inspires young people and educators through dynamic science and art experiences. The organization has transformed the lives of dozens of girls by connecting them with professional women working in STEM careers throughout Massachusetts.
Snapdragon’s volunteers gave a short flow chemistry demonstration to explain what makes the company different from those that work in more traditional batch chemistry. Next, they did a demonstration of chromatography to teach students about the polarity of different molecules and how they can be used to purify compounds. They also did a slime-making demonstration and finally made dry ice cream to explain sublimation versus melting and then evaporation.
“At Snapdragon, we prioritize culture and giving back, especially to young people interested in pursuing a career in STEM,” said Snapdragon President/CEO Matthew Bio. “We commend all of our volunteers and look forward to more opportunities like this one. Hopefully one day some of the young women who participated in the ‘Women in Science’ program will walk through our doors as future Snapdragon scientists.”
